Small Game Tables – Fun for Everyone

Posted: under Home furniture.

It seems that when most men grow up and move into their own place, whether this is a bachelor pad or maybe a small house or apartment with the wife, they all want a pool table. Its a universally fun game but the problem generally is, a pool table takes up a lot of space, more than many people have. Men, do not let this crush your dream of owning your own pool table. Why not buy a slightly smaller 7 ft. table? Its the same game and does not require as much space, and I would say the wife would probably go for it.

Organic Gardening Tips

Posted: under Landscaping.

Organic gardening has become extremely popular around the world and for a wonderful and obvious reason: it works well! One of the reasons why many people are turning to organic gardens is the fact that gardeners avoid using synthetic chemicals. Today, you don’t have to resort to synthetic chemicals to free yards from hazards. The real success when it comes to organic gardening lies in the methods used to keep plants and trees growing beautifully and vigorously. If this is the way you want go, your plants will not rely on sprays. In order to achieve this, one has to go down to the heart of it all, which is soil.

We all know that soil is the life of the garden. In fact, it is the life of any garden. When you enrich the soil in your garden with organic matter, the soil becomes fertile, airy and moist. This soil is then ideal for growing healthy plants. Organic garden soil also nourishes rich populations of organisms that are very beneficial to your garden. These are earthworms and other nutrient-releasing bacteria. It is thanks to these bacteria and earthworms for harboring root-extending fungi to help make the growing conditions in the plants and grass optimal.

Gardeners that specialize in organic gardens stress that the days of problems in gardens and landscaping ideas are over. If you are looking forward to doing this, putting your plants in the sun and making sure that they are getting the right amount of light in the suitable soil and the spacing between plants is perfect, you will experience a thriving garden with very minimal upsets. If you are looking for a few tips, below are a few basic things you need to know and could do to turn your ordinary garden into an organic garden.

You can start by making compost using the layering technique. This is known as the lazy way, and all you do here is take kitchen waste and lawn clippings. These are layered and then left until it is ready. Let nature take its course and turn this waste into dark, rich compost. If your waste is not prepared it could take longer.

You could also start by collecting yard scraps and dumping these into a heap in the corner of the backyard landscaping area. If you want to do this properly, make sure you have even amounts of softs and hards, for example fresh leaves and manure with chopped twigs and dead leaves. If you prefer you could also keep compost contained in wire mesh drums or wooden containers. Make sure that there is an opening at the bottom of the drum or container, so when the time is right you can open it and remove all finished and ready compost while the rest on top is still rotting or decaying.

Purchase a compost starter or even some good compost and add this to your new pile. This will jump-start the decaying stages of the organic materials. If you are looking for compost starters, these are available at any landscaping or garden ideas center in your area. If these starters are unavailable, you could also look out for mail ordering catalogs and order your starter from there. Compost starts contain decay-causing microorganisms, and if you have the time and patience to look around you will always find that some of the brands contain nutrients, hormones, enzymes and also other stimulants to help speed up the process.

Look out for woodland or garden soil. Although this is not as high tech and expensive as the ordinary compost starter, it does contain decomposers that are well able to decay your compost pile. As the compost pile builds up, sprinkle some woodland or garden soil in between scraps to start the decaying process evenly.

Another way you could start your compost pile is to build a bed consisting of branches and sticks and pile your wastes on top of that. The branched bed allows air to enter the compost from below. If you want, you could also add a perforated PVC pipe and position it in the center of the pile. This will allow air to enter the pipe and enter the pile through the perforations. The possibilities are endless and you will notice that it is not hard to start your own compost pile.

Once you have this out of the way your garden will be ready and things will change. You will notice that you will be using less water on your plants and your experience in the garden will just be worth it

Curb Appeal Landscaping Tips

Posted: under Landscaping.

If you are landscaping to simply make your yard look nice or if you are doing it to attract those potential buyers, there’s no difference to how it should be approached. At the end of the project, you simply want it to look nice. Whether you would like people to notice or not, they will. And even moreso if the landscaping is out of sorts and unsightly.

When possible buyers take a first look at the house, they most often make up their mind without getting out of the car if they should even go inside and have a look around. How your yard and front yard landscaping looks usually makes for an easy quick decision. If you have a wild over grown lawn, there will be a question as to what does the inside of the house look like? These buyers have the attitude of “if the front lawn looks like this just imagine what the inside looks like”. The front of your house is important for attracting people. If it’s not up to standard, then most folks will not even bother stopping.

If you want to be sure that folks are going to be coming inside, you’re going to have to spend a little time – maybe a few hours on the weekend – working on the landscaping as well as the outside of your home. Improving curb appeal also means improving the exterior of the home itself. It’s often hard to look at your home the way a buyer will look at it because when we become accustomed to how things look and the way they function, there are no faults. We don’t see them. You can start by not looking at the home as your home. Look at it as a property. It is a commodity that you are trying to sell for as much as you can. Now what do you see?

Here are a few things you can try.

The next time you come home, stand across the street and try to get a complete view of your house and all of its surroundings. What is the first impression you get when you look at your house and the surroundings? What are the most impressive exterior features? Is there a way that they can be enhanced? Point out the bad features and ask yourself if you can minimize, hide, or maybe improve them? Park somewhere you think a buyer would park and now slowly walk towards the house. Look around as if this is your first time here. Is it clean? Is it tidy? Are there things that can be done to make it a bit more attractive?

Go as far as taking pictures of the landscaping and of the exterior of your home. If you have a digital camera that you can view and print right away, even beter. Take pictures in color. Now when you go and view these pictures on the laptop or computer, pay attention to them and look closely at them. Now use the grayscale function and make them black-and-white. It is much easier to point out problems when there is no color present. Color affects your senses and you are not able to see certain things. B&W pictures will surprise you to just how much you will actually see.

Note down all the problems outside your home. It is always easier to tackle repair chores and then clean up chores. In order to repair some areas, you may have to mess them up first. It is important not to rush through a chore. Spend more time on those projects that help make the grounds and landscaping ideas more attractive. If you don’t want to spend a lot of time, then tackle the simple smaller things.

Get rid of any mildew and mold on the sidewalks, on the house, the driveway, on the roof, etc.

Put away those garden tools and implements.

Clean the gutters on the roof and the windows.

Pressure wash those dingy decks and dirty sidings.

Spend some time on the sidewalk and remove vegetation between bricks or concrete blocks.

Get rid of all the weeds in the grass and then mow.

Dispose of raked leaves.

It is important that you cut or trim all branches that are touching the house’s roof.

One more thing. Don’t forget the backyard landscaping. Buyers will probably not make the effort of walking into the backyard to see what it looks like over there, but that doesn’t give you an excuse to let it go. They can possibly make an effort by driving around the block and maybe finding it visible from a neighbor’s driveway or another street.

Creating Privacy In Gardens And Landscaping

Posted: under Landscaping.

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Privacy is a relative term that is related to many of our day to day activities and in almost all walks of life. You never want people to intrude into your personal affairs or activities in any manner. A garden is a place that is partly public, i.e. it is outdoors and if left bare, without any privacy enhanced, a peep from the outside by any intruder or a nosey neighbor will reveal almost everything that you do in the garden. So a garden is a secluded haven only when it is properly screened and protected properly.

A garden can be landscaped to enhance privacy in many ways. There are various methods to enclose the open space of your garden. Trees, shrubs, vines and even brick walls can be used in such a manner that they optimize the exposure of the garden design ideas to the outside world and at the same time do not screen the essential nutrients in the form of sunlight, air and blowing wind. A canopy of trees can give a secure appeal and prominent privacy by using the landscape to your advantage. It lets the sunlight to infiltrate through the branches but give the place a dense look so that the area is enclosed.

You can either wall you garden in or wall the intruders out by constructing a fence or a wall that obstructs the view from outside. This fencing can be affected in many ways which include brick patterns with sufficient holes for air circulation or vines and trestles that run through the circumference of the garden, the courtyard, or the backyard landscaping to enclose it. A long and a bare wall will spoil the entire look of the garden by making it monotonous. A simple way of eradicating this dull look is to embed it with shrubs of different designs slotted on the wall and hang potted plants on them.

Clusters of shrubs and smaller plants can also be used to separate areas that require privacy. A small bunch of shrubs can actually act as a fence to the children play area. They are harmless and can be made into various designs that make the arena attractive. Deciduous shrubs are often the choice of landscaping contractors and are the best natural screens available in nature. They are thick and protect the garden from unsightly views and at the same time they allow much of the sunlight to penetrate during the winter season. Evergreens and coniferous trees also serve the same purpose.

Vines grow on some solid support. They cannot stand as plants of their own and require a proper support (preferably wooden) to cling to. But this attribute of theirs can be used to screen the garden from outsiders. By arranging a proper fence, a chain link or so, and installing few vines at the bottom you will experience a beautiful fence in a few months. The major advantage of using vines is that they grow faster than the shrubs and do not require a lot of maintenance. Further, they occupy lesser space than shrubs which tend to grow horizontally too. Choosing vines that have thorns is a clever way of increasing your privacy and security as well.

If the garden is let open to the sky without a proper ceiling, it will give a bare look sans any intimacy. This can be avoided by installing a ceiling that either partly covers the sky or entirely covers it. Large trees can cover the sky partly and also provide substantial shade to the region from intense sunlight that might damage some sensitive plants.

Privacy problems should be addressed during the planning stages of the garden rather than making constant alterations after constructing them.

Spring Cooking With Crock Pots

Posted: under Landscaping.

Everyone’s busy welcoming the warm weather and driving out the last few traces of winter. And for most people, there’s no better way to enjoy spring than with good food and good company. All you need is a nice spring menu—but that’s where many people fail. For something you celebrate every year, it’s certainly easy to run out of ideas on what to serve for a spring party. A lot of us just settle for the good old grill and salads. If this sounds like you, you might want to consider spring crock pot recipes this year.

Slow cooking is making a comeback in American kitchens, and they’ve become much more versatile than in their 70s heyday. Crock pots are now being used for dinners, breakfasts, snacks, and even desserts. Many people find it a great time-saver, since you can leave it unattended while you go to work or attend to other chores. And the slow-cooking process simply works for any dish, bringing out the natural flavors of each ingredient. To bring out the best in the season, here are some quick ideas you can try with your crock pot.

Bring on the greens

Green is definitely the color of spring, as the trees start blooming and the grass creeps out from under all that snow. Serving fresh vegetables is the best way to complement the good weather and get your family to eat healthy as well. And unlike most people believe, it is possible to cook vegetables in the crock pot—sometimes they’re even better when slow-cooked! Start with a simple crock pot green beans recipe using fresh green beans, other veggies you like, and maybe some salt pork squares for added flavor.

One thing to remember when slow-cooking vegetables is that they tend to get mushy in the crock pot. Since they cook faster in water, try to reduce the water content if the ingredients are mostly light vegetables. If you’re cooking heavy ones like potato along with meat, put the root crops at the bottom and layer the meats on top. This way, they’ll all cook at about the same rate and nothing gets overcooked.

Snack on comfort foods

Maybe it’s the good weather or the great views, but there’s something about spring that’s just conducive to comfort eating. Sure, they’re not always the healthiest of foods, but it won’t hurt to indulge once in a while. And with the crock pot, your favorite comfort foods take a different, more diet-friendly character. If you have some leftover bread, try making some crock pot bread pudding—all you need are some eggs, milk, sugar, and maybe some dried fruit for taste and texture.

The best thing about crock pot comfort food is that making it is half the fun. The smells alone are enough to lift your mood, and since it cooks all day, the smell just fills the room and gives you that warm, cozy filling. You can make enough for the whole family—it stays warm in the pot so everyone can help themselves anytime. It’s also great served cold and sprinkled with a bit of nutmeg.

Make a satisfying main dish

So far we’ve talked about light foods, but why not use the crock pot for what it does best: big, satisfying main courses? The reason crock pots are commonly associated with dinner is that they simply fit in with the typical dinner menu. This spring, put a healthy twist on your dinners with slow-cooked versions of you or your family’s favorites. Crock pot meatloaf, for example, is very easy to make and has so much variety that it can qualify as a one-dish meal.

A good spring meatloaf offers a healthy mix of good old meat and fresh herbs and spices. You don’t have to deviate too far from your old recipe—just throw in some veggies and add some basil or parsley to give it that fresh spring flavor. You can also add a few spices to give it that extra bite. A regular-sized loaf will take about eight hours to cook on low, but you can set it to high the last hour or so if you want a slightly toasted exterior.

Use some fresh fruit

What’s a better way to finish off a spring meal than a generous serving of fruit for dessert? Not only is it healthier, it’s also much more filling and offers a distinct mix of flavors. Fruits make the best crock pot recipes for dessert, and you can be sure that people will be lining up for seconds. Popular slow cooker desserts include cobbler, apple crumble, and baked or stewed fruit.

You may want to use a smaller crock pot for dessert recipes because it helps concentrate the flavors. If you only have a large or regular-sized pot, simply adjust the liquid content so the fruit’s juices don’t get washed out. Most crock pot desserts go well with a dollop of cream or ice cream—the perfect treat for spring!

Easy Must-Have Tips For Proper And Safer Granite Cleaning

Posted: under Landscaping.

Cleaning granite countertops can either be tiresome or effortless.  Depending on the granite cleaning methods that you make use of as well as the cleaning products that you incorporate, taking care of granite countertops should never wear you out or harm your granite surfaces.  With the wide range of granite cleaners available, you might be confused on what to use that can help you achieve a safe and effective way of cleaning granite countertops or floors.

You should be fully-aware that granite cleaning is not just about removing stains, spills and dirt or other cleaning dilemmas as far as granite countertops is concerned.  Cleaning granite-made surfaces should also be directed towards preserving its shine and durability without all the harmful fumes and annoying odors.  Since most of granite countertops are located in the kitchen, who would want to prepare meals on surfaces where chemicals and other harsh ingredients are being utilized at?

Instead of relying on your countertops when it comes to cutting food stuffs, make use of chopping boards.  You can also make use of old thick plates as cutting surfaces but only when soft stuffs are to be cut such as tomatoes and the like.  Cutting or chopping marks left on your granite pieces may be removed at some cost but excessive exposure to sharp objects can ruin the surface.

Putting saucepans or cooking pots and the like on top of your granite countertops can contribute to the damage on the surface.  Although its effects may not be visible at once, exposing granite pieces to too much heat with some stains on it can bring forth stubborn cleaning dilemmas.  Thus, it is wise to have pot holders or other stuffs that you can use to place your hot pots and pan especially those that have stains or dirt on the bottom part.

See to it that you apply granite polish and sealants for additional protection and maintenance.  But make sure that you clean the surface well enough just before you do the process.  Vacuum excess moisture and remove dirt, spills and stains as thorough as possible.

Avoid cleaning granite counters with soap and water.  Though they can be effective in removing fowl odor and stains or spills, it can eventually develop a visible water/soap film that you will have a hard time removing.  Don’t mix household ingredients to fabricate your own cleaning products if you have no sufficient information about it.

Rough means of removing stains, spills and dirt added with the use of strong acids, chemicals or other cleaners enhanced with harsh ingredients can actually cause loads of problems to your granite countertops.  Breakage of the surface can be expected especially the diminishing level of its radiant color.  Losing the shimmering effect of granite pieces is one of the many troubles most households have.

Moreover, inappropriate cleaning products or granite cleaners can inflict harm not just to your granite countertops but also to your health and environment.  Granite stones react to harsh ingredients so naturally-made ones which are more delicate yet effective should be preferred.  If you want to have an eco-friendly means of keeping your granite countertops clean and shiny as always, then opt in for natural cleaning products since they are the only biodegradable cleaning agents that you can have for chemical-free and more convenient granite cleaning.

Table Settings for Changing Seasons

Posted: under Landscaping.

You’ve probably heard of people changing their décor to suit the season. But have you ever thought about using seasonal table settings as well? Most families spend a lot of time at the table, whether for regular meals or the occasional holiday gathering. So it only makes sense to decorate your table accordingly—not only does it help you into the mood, it also adds a sense of variety to your kitchen. Even if you don’t have four-season weather, it’s nice to change up the look every now and then.

So how do you decorate your table for the seasons? Well, the good news is that it’s a lot easier than it seems. When you look at pictures of party setups, you’ll notice that most of them are actually inspired by seasonal changes. From the linen colors to the plates and cutlery styles, there’s always a new idea to be had from the seasons. Sometimes, even a small, simple change can make all the difference between a drab table and a stylish one. To help you get started, here’s a quick guide to setting your table for different seasons.

Spring

Most of the seasonal décor ideas for spring revolve around its lively colors, pleasant weather, and all-around positive mood. Spring tables are all about fresh greenery and flowers, cheerful hues and soft textures. For most people, spring is all about driving away the last traces of winter. So get rid of those dark, heavy drapes and replace them with bright pastel tablecloths. If your table is in a large windowed room, all the better—keep it open and maximize the natural light coming in.

Spring events are usually held in the daytime, so day colors usually work best. If you need a centerpiece, simply use fresh flowers—you can get a spring bouquet from the shop or pick some from your own garden. Try to vary the colors for a more striking impact, or match your color scheme if you have one. The resulting look should be eye-catching but subtle, enough to draw attention but still keep a light, breezy mood.

Summer

The first thing most people picture in a summer party is a tropical table setting. You might have a bowl of tropical fruits as your centerpiece, or use palm leaves as table setting chargers. Most spring colors also work well for summer, although deeper shades may make a better match. Bright greens, browns, and oranges help create the tropical look and put everyone in that festive summer mood. Natural textures such as wood and bamboo also work well—you can use them as placemats or place cards.

Of course, summer is also the time to take the party outdoors. If you have a large backyard or live close to a park, take advantage of the good weather and turn it into an outdoor event. Outdoor parties help put people in a more casual mood, so you can better enjoy the company. It also helps you accommodate more people and save money on décor and lighting. With a colorful table setting and a fun venue, your summer party is sure to be a hit!

Autumn

Autumn is well known for its vibrant colors, particularly in the leaves: brilliant reds, yellows, and oranges lining the streets and making the trees look almost surreal. The famous Oprah fall 2005 table setting celebrates these colors with a dramatic column of deep red roses running down the length of the table, set against a background of pristine white. This simple combination creates a striking contrast characteristic of a typical autumn scene.

You can recreate this look on a smaller table using plain white linens, shiny cutlery, and elegant glassware. Just put some red roses in a low vase and place it at the center of the table for a strong yet subtle centerpiece. If you want a bit more variety, you can also combine crisp colors like purple, blue and brown—it still embodies the cool autumn weather but has a softer effect than the traditional red scheme.

Winter

People tend to shrug off winter as a cold, uninviting season. But there’s more to it than bitter cold and snow. For instance, there’s the Christmas party—that’s not something you’ll want to miss out on! Instead of locking up, fight the winter blues with a warm, cozy table setting.

Start by adding more color to your table. Do away with dark, dismal colors and cover the table with a cloth in warmer colors, such as brown, cream, or copper. Use shiny pieces and floral patterns wherever you can. Instead of a dim candle centerpiece, try making a dried flower table arrangement to add color and charm to the table. Finish off with some colorful accessories and you’ve got the perfect setting for a winter party!

Knowing the Habits of Flowers

Posted: under Landscaping.

The habit of the plant is the next point to be considered, and it is by no means an unimportant one. Habit not only means shape, size, and general appearance, but also those special characters, which distinguish one plant from another. It may consist in mode of branching, texture of foliage, form of flower head, color of foliage, denseness or sparseness of blossom, or time of flowering in relation to leaf production (some plants, it is well known, put forth their flowers before their leaves, as the daphne, forsythia, etc.).

It is only when we know these details that we are in a position to use the plant to best advantage. It is important that garden plants should be allowed freedom of growth to develop their individual characters amongst outdoor statuary, indoor wall fountains that have been incorporated outdoors, or garden waterfalls that may be a part of the garden as well. Character in the plant is one of its greatest charms to those who regard it not merely as a means for producing blossom.

“Freedom of growth” refers to the growing of plants in a way to develop their special habit, instead of pinching and cutting them into some conventional form foreign to their nature. In a herbaceous border the best general effect is produced when there is no rigid system of grading the plants in height. Though the rule should be to put the taller and more robust plants to the back, it is essential to the best results from a picturesque point of view that this rule should be broken occasionally, by here and there reversing it.

One or more bold clumps of flower brought to the front at irregular intervals gives a character to the border that would be unobtainable in any other way. If you pride yourself on a tidy garden you may resent the intrusion of a massy clump upon the path or grass edge, and will keep it within bounds by ill-judged mutilation, till the poor intruder becomes a maimed wreck. It is by this kind of gardening that plants are shorn of their beauty, and the border is made a stiff and formal detail.

The next point is to see that each plant has sufficient elbow-room to develop without hindrance from its neighbors (including a potential outdoor fountain, wall water fountain, or piece of garden statuary). This does not imply a starved bed or border only that armed with the knowledge of the habit of each plant, the gardener allots it just sufficient room to grow centrifugally without check from its companions. Thus the taller plants may be separated by others of more moderate growth, and the former will have space above to expand their foliage unhindered.

Again, with a knowledge of plant habit we may associate bushy plants with those which tend to legginess — to use a term well known to the gardening fraternity — and thereby conceal the uninteresting view of a sheaf of bare stalks. Plants which throw up long narrow spikes of flower may keep company with others having a tufted habit, to their mutual advantage in the general effect.

Those with silvery, glaucous, or bronze foliage maybe placed where they will reinforce others whose flowers are best set off by contrast with these special kinds of foliage. Shrubs and plants which flower in advance of their leaves may be supported by evergreen or early leafing plants. Again, we may use the bold foliaged plant for association with those of sparse and inconspicuous habit.

The final result of care in these particulars will be a natural, informal effect, in which every individual plant appears to be, and is, at home in its surroundings, and in consequence is best conditioned for producing its maximum contribution to the aggregate picture. If some vigorous plant pushes forward beyond the boundary, begins to overshadow your large fountains, patio statuary, or garden water features, or some pretty trailer ignores the edging, it is a gain to the gardener and no fault of the planting. Such accidents should be within reason and can even be conspired for the special purpose of importing informality into the garden.

In the back row, variety of height is desirable, even when all are tall, for the plants will silhouette against the background, and an even row, like soldiers on parade, would be monotonous. In beds and groups of beds the same principles apply, but not quite in the same degree. You can group the tall plants in the centre and reserve the margin for others of smaller and more uniform size. Though you may plan on geometrical lines, you should, like the painter, endeavor to soften them. Your plants will do that for you if only you allow them.

Helpful Hints on Using a Water Stain

Posted: under Interior decorating.

You should be aware that the end grain of wood takes too much stain. Consequently it becomes too dark unless you take extra care to prevent this extra absorption. The open ends of the tracheal vessels, or the tracheids in some woods, absorb very avidly water and stains in general.

Sometimes if you sponge the stain on to the end-grain and apply the stain while this part of the wood is wet, this will even up the color, just as it may do on sap-wood.

Some wood finishers prefer to apply a coat of very thin glue sizing to the end grain and sapwood, after they have performed a few experiments to determine the proportions of sizing glue and water that they need to have in the mixture.

The end grain usually requires more glue in the sizing mixture than does sapwood. You should wait until the sizing has dried in the pores before you start applying the stain and if necessary do some resanding of the wood, regardless of whether the wood will be used for plinth blocks, door toppers, or corner guards.

Knots and different kinds of wood which are laid side by side sometimes require special treatment, but some variation of the methods suggested for end grain and sapwood are ordinarily used.

The end grain of woods with large open pores especially is sometimes treated with a coat of paste wood filler to prevent the stain from soaking in too much. None of the filler should be allowed to run over on the faces and edges, or you will have lighter spots or streaks in places where they are not wanted.

When you use brushes to apply water stains, they should not be kept standing in the stains, because soaking will cause the bristles to become too soft and “moppy” for good work. They can be washed in water and dried and in this way, you can keep them in better condition for future work on fireplace mantles, wood fireplace inserts, or ornamental pediment!

A fitch brush about 2½” wide, set with a rubber ferrule, is the type of brush frequently used for water staining.  Polar-bear bristles, which should be rubberset, are also preferred for some kinds of work.

A rather soft brush will do good work in staining a closely grained wood, but, for wood with large open pores, a stiff bristle brush is superior because it can reach and cover the bottoms of the cell openings. Stiff brushes give a flatter or more even tone than flaccid brushes in staining porous wood.

A soft brush, if used on wood with large open pores, leaves light specks in the cell cavities because stain thus applied docs not penetrate sufficiently into the tiny openings. Glue-set brushes cannot be used for any length of time in water stains because the bristles will come out when the glue softens.

Either oval or flat brushes are satisfactory, but in any case a rather large size is preferable to a smaller size brush. On large piece of wood, it is best to use a 3″ or 4″ brush because it holds more stain and this will make the work of staining less tedious.

Using Varnishes

Posted: under Interior decorating.

Spirit Varnishes

The old types of spirit and volatile oil varnishes, such as shellac and dammar varnish, are still used for numerous purposes. They are made cold or without great heat by dissolving the resin in its best solvent, such as grain alcohol for shellac and turpentine or more commonly a turpentine substitute for dammar and mastic.

Shellac substitutes, which are cheap, inferior finishes, also belong in this group if they contain alcohol as a solvent. Some of the new synthetic gums similar to those used in lacquers are also soluble in volatile oils and varnishes from them belong in this group because they dry by evaporation, which is ideal for wood plinth blocks, wooden bar rails, or wood door toppers.

The user of shellac 40 or 50 years ago bought orange flake shellac in the form of thin scales varying in size up to about three-quarters of an inch in diameter. wood alcohol was the solvent which the shop finisher used in preparing his orange shellac. White shellac was made from
chunks of bleached shellac which dissolved with difficulty in wood alcohol, especially if the shellac was old and had been exposed to the air for some time.

Today, either orange or white shellac in liquid form of various strengths dissolved in denatured grain alcohol can be obtained from almost any dealer in finishing supplies. Some of the cheaper liquid shellacs of today are made with a solvent which is a mixture of grain and wood alcohol. Such shellac produces a disagreeable odor when it is being applied.

Shellac varnishes may be thinned with cold denatured alcohol and can then be used in a very short time. Coatings of shellac varnish dry very quickly and produce a low gloss or semi lustrous finish. Shellac varnish is often used on floors, corner guards, plinth blocks, door toppers, and for some other similar wood finishes. Shellac coatings will turn white if exposed to the weather or spotted with water.

Contractors often prefer shellac as a floor finish because it is easy to apply, dries quickly, and produces a good effect. Shellac is generally unsatisfactory for floors because it does not wear long or well and turns white if water comes in contact with it. Shellac, somewhat diluted, is often used for an undercoat or as a sealer. It should be sanded well before another finish is applied over it in order to secure smoothness and aid in the adhesion of the next coating.

Oil Varnishes with Linseed Oil

Varnishes made from fossil resins, ester gum, or treated rosin, which can be melted to liquid form at great heat and then combined with linseed oil in large part, have been the standard slow drying varnishes that have been in use in some of their forms for centuries. Metallic driers of several types have usually been added in small amounts to speed-up drying or oxidation.

An excess of drier cannot be added to increase the drying speed even for wood surfaces such as window toppers, fireplace mantels, or even plinth blocks because of various difficulties that are impossible to overcome. In the old oil or oleoresinous varnishes, turpentine was placed in the mixture as a thinner or volatile solvent; but, for some years, this excellent solvent has been replaced very largely by some mineral spirit or a cheap petroleum volatile oil.

It is through the evaporation of the thinner or solvent and the slower changes in the drying oil, which the chemists say is largely oxidation that a linseed oil varnish including fossil resins dries out and changes from a liquid to a solid film. There is a rather marked chemical change during the oxidation of drying oils, such as linseed oil, and the new substance formed has molecules which contain additional atoms of oxygen.

The oxidation of a varnish film begins at the surface, which forms a skin on the outside and dries out more slowly inside because of greater difficulty in obtaining oxygen from the air about the film. For fireplace inserts, ornamental pediment, and wood fireplace mantels, this is ideal due to the necessity for quick drying on the immediate surface. The standard thinner for practically all of the high grade oil varnishes of the hard fossil gum type was turpentine, which almost entirely dried out by evaporation, leaving only a very small residue.

Other volatile thinners have more recently been substituted for turpentine with success since Congo resin and kauri have become scarce and expensive and other resins have replaced the hard fossil resins at least in part.

Great variations in the speed for drying of linseed oil varnishes made with hard fossil gums are possible. Quick drying or four-hour varnishes, however, are not produced from these materials. The drying times of most fossil gum varnishes vary from about two days to about a year.

The very slow drying type is sometimes used on fish rods in order to secure a very flexible finish. Heat treatments of the linseed-oil produce great changes in the oil, and variations in the speed in drying of varnishes made from oils of different heat treatments are very great.

Summary of the Basis of Insurance

Posted: under Family history.

Before undertaking the study of insurance, it is necessary to have an understanding of some of the basic terms used in that study.

Certain definitions are essential: (1) Riskuncertainty concerning loss; (2) degree of riskthe accuracy with which a given loss can be predicted; (3) chance of lossthe probable number of times in any given number of exposures that loss will occur; (4) perilthat which can cause loss; (5) hazarda condition that may create or increase the chance of loss; and (6) lossthe unintentional parting with value.

The real cost of risk to society goes on whether there is ever an actual physical loss or not, such as when life insurance basics come into play. Economic fear, which causes an uneconomic allocation of resources, is the real cost. By eliminating this fear to a great extent, insurance permits greater production and a higher standard of living for all.

There are five basic ways in which risk may be handled: (1) It may be assumed, with or without the provision of a reserve fund; (2) the hazard may be reduced; (3) the loss may be reduced; (4) the risk may be shifted, as in hedging, subcontracting, surety bonding, or incorporation; and (5) risk may be reduced.

This may be done through combination of risks to permit more accurate prediction. The loss, when predicted, is then shared proportionately by all members of the group. It is on the combination of risks and the sharing of losses that insurance is based.

To be suitable for insurance, a hazard must meet certain conditions. First of all, the hazard must threaten a large, homogeneous group. It must produce a loss that is definite in time and place and that is of accidental origin. Even with companies that offer no exam life insurance rates, a certain probability of loss is still ascertainable.

Ideally, the loss should be beyond the control of the insured. The hazard must be capable of producing a loss large enough to be economically disturbing to the individual, yet the cost of the insurance must be low enough to be within the insured’s reach.

It must be possible to predict the losses with an accuracy that will permit the insurance company to set up a premium scale sufficient to pay losses as they occur. Finally, losses must not occur to a majority of the insureds at the same time. If there is a possibility of a catastrophic loss, there is a possibility of having an insolvent insurance company.

Besides the obvious function of providing a mechanism for the sharing of losses, insurance performs other important social functions. Insurance companies try to prevent losses before they occur. Much time, effort, and money have been spent by the companies in furthering their loss-prevention programs.

Insurance relieves businessmen of some of their business risks. In the home, homeowner insurance and affordable life insurance helps to eliminate worry. Insurance as a basis of credit is of vast significance, and the growing importance of insurance companies as a tremendous power in the economic life of the country through their vast investment holdings must not be overlooked in assessing the insurance industry’s contribution to our social world.

The contributions of the insurance industry are not without their costs. The insurance industry consumes productive labor, space, and capital. It may lead to willful destruction of lives and property and to carelessness in the maintenance of property. All in all, however, the social benefits of insurance far outweigh its social cost.

100% Organic Rust Removal – Mending Outdoor Furniture

Posted: under Home furniture.

Outdoor furniture faces harsh elements such as the sun and rain, even rust.  Get the latest in Rust removal products.

When you have outdoor furniture it is to be expected that they will have to face the harsh elements such as the intense heat of the sun and the cold rain showers not to mention spilled food from overeager guests and maybe even smelly accidents from your beloved pets.  However your outdoor furniture pieces are made from durable materials and you hose or wipe off the leaves and stains as part of cleaning up.  Eventually you notice that scrapes and even rust will appear.  Luckily there are now cleaners that are ultimately designed to care for such property and you will notice that they tend to perform better than the standard household cleaning agents.  For instance, if you check the label and you notice the material is similar to a cleaner designed for cleaning your car then you can use that same cleaner on your outdoor furniture.

Rust removal should be done periodically.  Regular attention is required to prevent rust, which left unchecked will definitely eat right through the metal furniture.  Make sure that you do the following: first, you check and inspect frequently particularly at the welded joints.  If you notice that the paint is peeling or reddish rust stains are evident, you can probably sand down the problem area in order to see the bare the metal.  Next, prime the area and then coat it with a metal paint that is rust-resistant.  Make sure that the paint is rated for exterior use.  Then follow it up with car wax.  If we are removing rust particularly from our outdoor furniture, we want to be very attentive that we will not scrape the surface and so we are likely to wipe more slowly as we get rid of the rust.  For example, we do not lay a hand on anything rusty because it is rather tricky to remove once it has tainted your skin or clothing.  There is also a disagreeable smell coupled with rust.  It is also dangerous to breathe in or ingest this form of substance.

At the same time, we are very much aware of the effects of household cleaners on the environment.  The fact that household cleaners are among the major pollutants inside our homes is alarming given that we always use commercial cleaners.  Common cleaning agents have a tendency to contain toxic and harmful chemicals that not only threats our wellbeing but also harms the delicate environment.  We want to clean our household because we value the welfare of every individual living inside but at the same time we agonize that we might throw in to indoor pollution.  Choosing an organic rust remover can certainly be a smart move in protecting the environment.

Developments in science have created cleaning agents from all natural and organic substances that would also shield the person managing it.  Not like the customary cleaners, they do not release harmful and toxic materials that might damage vital organs such as our lungs.  These products are not likely to be carcinogenic or cause other ailments like asthma or aggravate the conditions of those inhabitants who are compromised immune systems.  Rust is the normal effect of oxidation of such elements and so in order to guarantee lasting function of our assets we make efforts to divest them of rust.  With the latest cleaners close by, rust can easily be eliminated without having to scrub vigorously.  To do such a thing might scratch or spoil some precious property.

Rust can be removed easily with the latest line of cleaners and with the understanding that these products are ecologically safe to use, we are certain that our precious metal and iron possessions can continue to be of use to us.  As long as we are equipped with the right product there is no likelihood that we might harm ourselves and the environment.  Your outdoor furniture can be periodically maintained and taken care of by using the right cleaning agent such as an organic rust stain remover.

Quick Meals For Winter

Posted: under Home furniture.

As the leaves begin to fall from the trees and the air outside turns brisk, people begin to crave warm, hardy meals.  These meals can be very time consuming and laborious, but they don’t have to be!  Utilizing your crock pot will allow you to spend your time with things other than cooking and still provide you with a robust homemade meal.  Following are some quick crock pot recipes ideas that are sure to delight your entire family:

Winter Meals With Chicken

Crock pot chicken recipes are healthy and delicious.  Many people forget about chicken when they think of using your crock pot, but cooking chicken dishes is simple.  You have the option of cooking a whole chicken, cut-up chicken or chicken pieces with or without the bone.  Chicken should usually be placed in raw to make sure it stays tender and juicy, but you can pre-cook if you are really pressed for time.  Be careful not to overcook if you decide to brown the chicken in a skillet first or the meat may become dry and/or tough.

No matter what chicken recipe you plan to use, consider marinating the chicken first.  This will add extra flavor to your dish with minimal effort.  Try taking your whole chicken or chicken parts and putting in a sealed baggie filled with Italian dressing over night to create a delectable main course that tastes like you spent hours slaving in the kitchen.  Add the marinade to the crock pot with the chicken when you cook to create a more intense flavor.  Since a crock pot cooks slowly, you can always remove the skin from your chicken to make the dish low fat.  If you get bored with chicken dishes, use other poultry to switch it up.  Turkey, pheasant, and duck are great alternatives.

Winter Meals With Beef

Crock pot beef recipes are always a hit.  Whether you use your crock pot to slow cook an entire roast or rack of ribs or whether you make a wonderful beef stew, you are sure to delight.  Slow cooking beef will ensure it stays tender.  Take your favorite oven cooked roast recipe and try it in the crock pot for meat that will melt in your mouth.  If you are cooking on a tight budget, the crock pot will allow you to make fantastic dishes with cheaper cuts of meat because slow cooking will keep them tender.

If you are in a huge rush for time, buy stew meats that are already cut up.  Forget buying stew in a can when you can create a homemade meal in almost the same prep time.  Anyone can make a wonderful full-bodied crock pot beef stew.  All you have to do is throw in your favorite vegetables (raw, frozen, or even canned), some cubed beef, and some vegetable or meat stock.  Turn the crock pot on and forget about it until you are ready to ladle it out and eat!

To make the meat appear more attractive and to slightly speed up the time it takes to cook, you can lightly brown the meat in a skillet before adding to the crock pot.  This will also cook out some of the fat in the meat making it healthier.  To save even more time in the future, cook the largest roast you can fit in the crock pot.  Divide it up and freeze half of it for an easy main course later.  You can also cut up half to add in a soup or stew for a quick, easy meal later.

Winter Meals With Vegetables

Crock pot vegetarian recipes are simple and quick.  Spicy foods actually raise body temperature, so consider zesty variations of your favorite soups and stews to make them perfect for cold days.  Another way to make vegetarian crock pot dishes more robust is to thicken them with creamed soups and thickeners such as flour and cornstarch.  You may also consider putting them in a blender after they have cooked for a nutritious lasting meal.  Slow cooking is a perfect way to prepare raw vegetable and dried beans because it holds in all the flavor and vitamins without making the foods too mushy.

Most any soup or stew recipe can be easily converted to a vegetarian dish.  Simply take out the meat and any meat product such as stock and replace it with protein rich legumes or meat alternatives such as soy and tofu.  You don’t have to be a vegetarian to enjoy the flavor and nutrition of these dishes.  Vegetarian crock pot recipes are a heart healthy option for all families as the main course or as an appetizer or side dish.  If properly prepared and seasoned, you won’t even miss the meat!

11 Latest Tips for Wall Decor

Posted: under Cake decorating.

Oil paintings have become a mainstay in the world of modern art, just as modern wall sculptures frequently beautify today’s homes. Some of the most famous oil paintings in the history of oil painting include:

Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer
Le Moulin de la Galette  by Renoir
    Mona Lisa by daVinci
The Starry Night by van Gogh
    Water Lilies by Monet

When did humans create the first oil paintings? Recently, an assessment of murals within some of Afghanistan’s caves has resulted in a new revelation. Oil painting existed in Asia up to 800 years prior to Europeans’ use of the medium. According to solid scientific studies, 12 of the caves in the region with murals from the 600s to the 900s, contain oil paintings.

How were experts able to determine that people used oil-based paints to create the murals? They meticulously operated high-tech equipment to classify each layer’s color and binders.  Experts believe the paints included oils from poppy-seeds and walnuts (Those ingredients make the paint seem tasty enough to eat). They have determined that the creators of the artworks were probably nomadic painters who traveled from China to the West, via the trade path known as the Silk Road.

An international group of art historians and scientists collected samples of the murals, to classify pigments included in it. Their objective is to create reproductions of the murals.

Though humans have graduated from caves to houses, today we can still use a variety of wall decor, such as oil paintings, to improve the beautify our homes. Here are some guidelines that can help to improve the arrangement of wall art, such as metal wall grilles, in your home:

1. Amass wall art with themes
You can use several smaller wall art pieces with the same theme, to create an eye-catching effect. You do not have to use a particular schema when arranging the pieces. In fact, you should hang them up randomly in a contemporary region of your house. The collection can include such themes as works from your favorite contemporary artist.

2. Hang up wall decor that resembles architecture
Make sure that you contrast the hue of the wall decor with the hue of the wall itself. Try to create some balance between the size and shape of the wall art, with the corresponding size and shape of the wall itself. Also, match up light decor with a dark wall, and vice versa. This will help to increase the effect that the wall decor creates.

3. Prove that good things come in threes
Frame three smaller objects in a single mat and frame. In particular, the frame will increase the effect of the objects on the wall. You could include pictures, sketches, etc. What are the advantages of this method? It will reduce the size of the wall art/wall ratio. In addition, one frame costs less than three frames do, so it is easier on your wallet.

4. Create variety in the shapes of the wall art’s frames
Group together wall art pieces with frames of different shapes. For instance, you could group rectangular frames with two circular frames. You could also include fake pictures wires and vines that you painted by hand.

5. Verify that you secured the wall art properly to the wall.
It is important to use picture hooks that are appropriate for the wall art piece’s weight. If you are unsure about which hardware to use when hanging wall art, or how to hang it, and then consult an expert. Wall art, including round iron wall grilles is an investment, so it is wise to protect your investment.

6.  Pair up similar frames and mats
This method will add an aura of significance to whatever is between the frame. Even if you only include a photo or postcard, the technique can be effective. In addition, regardless of how many pictures you include in the set, they will appear dignified and unified.

7. Lighten up
Art has the ability to create a full spectrum of emotions in us, including humor. Choose wall art that is funny or simply fun. This could include lighthearted pictures of cartoon characters, humorous posters with adorable kids or pets, etc. You can also match up the vibrant colors in the wall art, with the decor in the room. That includes the wall hue, carpeting, furniture, etc.

8. Vary the mat colors
By using mats of contrasting colors, you can improve the impact of the wall art pieces.

9. Create balance with a group of smaller wall art pieces
When you need to arrange smaller wall art pieces into a balanced group, you can use a variety of techniques.

One way to organize smaller wall art pieces is by creating the illusion that the smaller pieces are larger than they actually are. You can do this by using pieces of various shapes. Space them out to expand the surface area that they cover. It is amazing how small wall art pieces such as round iron wall grilles that would seem lonely on a huge wall, can take up a substantially larger amount of space when grouped with other pieces.

Another option is to create a box by offsetting two vertical frames and two horizontal frames. By creating the box, the smaller pieces create a formation that functions as a single unit. Even though the four pieces are of different sizes, the perimeter creates a perfect box. Perfect is good.

10. Use wall art that motivates you
This could include a picture of a place you have visited, or a place that you would like to visit.  Match up the colors and themes of the wall art with the colors and themes of decor that surround the pictures.

11. Match up wall art with furniture below
It is advisable to create a link between wall art, such as wrought iron wall art, and furniture that sits beneath it. By relating the wall art piece and the furniture, there is no huge gap between the two objects.

Training Away Dog Aggression

Posted: under Pets care.

Regardless of the size of your dog, it’s critical to take steps in the beginning to prevent aggression.  There’s nothing worse than having your dog bite someone.  It’s embarrassing, it’s frightening and it can cause your dog to be taken away from you and lose its life.  Why deal with that kind of angst when the solution is actually quite simple.

There are different types of aggression but many of them stem from the same thing, a lack of socialization and preparedness.

How to Deal with Dog Aggression

Fear aggression while it can stem from trauma often comes from a dog not knowing how to deal with a situation.  Dominance aggression comes from a dog who is confused about his relationship with the family and preparation aggression comes from a dog that is quite simply not prepared for what life has to offer.

Basic training like sit, stay, and heel are a good foundation to truly protect your dog from aggressive behavior consider undergoing a toddler training regimen.

Jeff Kinsley of SoundAnimals.com says, “Toddler training is where we do behaviors that maybe don’t have a medical or grooming purpose and they may not even seem like they are all that enjoyable for the dog.  However, toddlers especially may be more apt to do them like yanking on the tail, pulling on an ear, pulling on the fur, grabbing on the dog, charging up to the dog which again some adults even will do these things with dogs they don’t know.”

He uses food as a source of pleasure for the animal thus making the dog both accustomed to having hands on them as well as associating the handling with pleasant experiences like cheese or hot dogs.  While it may seem like a good idea to have children in on the training process, with toddler training how you approach it depends largely on the age, size and temperament of your dog.

“If the dog is older,” says Tinsley, “and is objecting to some of these things, you’re definitely going to want to leave the kids out of the process at the beginning until the dog will allow people to do all these things without any objection and that we start slowly back with children.”

Kinsley also recommends making training into a game.  “With younger dogs that are just going through this toddler training process for the first time, I definitely encourage people, especially if they have young kids to play games with the dog.  Simon Says is a great game.  Simon would be one of the adults holding a handful of high value treats, like again chicken or cheese or something. Playing games can greatly reduce dog aggression.

“They’re Simon and they tell the kid Simon Says pull the dog’s tail.  And when they pull the dog’s tail, the dog gets chicken.  They go through a little process, obviously with the understanding that we’re not going to be hurting the dog and that we’re just going to be getting the dog used to these kinds of behaviors.

Socialization plays an important role in raising calm and non-aggressive dogs.  Whether you have small dogs or larger ones it’s important to expose your dog to a wealth of experiences.  Take them to the park, take them to the city, take them to the dog park, to visit your family.  Take your dog to the dog daycare, let other people walk them, feed them and so on.  Let your dog become accustomed to as many sights, sounds, situations and experiences as possible.

The more prepared they are the less likely they’ll be to attack out of fear, lack of social preparation or even dominance.  Training, toddler training, and basic obedience training will go a long way toward raising a well adjusted dog who can handle just about anything and avoid dog aggression.

Selling Your Home? Sell Your Landscaping.

Posted: under Home furniture.

Your home’s looking spiffy.  You’ve polished the hardwood floors, painted designer colors and cleared up the clutter.  Outside your front window beyond, your realty sign, a car creeps slowly alongside the curb . . . and continues.  "Hey! Stop!, you think."  "This is a great house!"

In today’s tough, tough, tough real estate market, if your front yard landscaping ideas don’t scream "COME ON IN!" you’re likely to lose an ever diminishing number of buyers to your neighbor, who’s curbside appeal is really appealing!

It used to be that great landscaping would increase the value of a home by about 7% – 15 %.  But with contracts falling through and buyers with good credit unable to qualify for a loan, landscaping has unfortunately become a seller’s "MUST DO!" in order to get buyers through your door.  And it’s not just the front yard, once real estate agents get their clients into your home, if your backyard doesn’t beacon them to sit a while and put their feet up, those coveted buyers may just continue looking until they find a backyard that does.

You wonder how in the world you’ll come up with the necessary $10,000 to $25,000 for landscaping!  Here’s the good news, you can actually spend far less than that and still attract buyers. Assuming that the front of your home has a fresh coat of paint, or is in reasonably attractive shape, there are some smaller less expensive touches that will make a world of difference and won’t break the bank.

Start by making sure your overgrown shrubs are cut back to show off your home’s façade.  Junipers are a "must go".  Flowers are a "must have".  If the lawn is overgrown with weeds and brown polka dots, consider laying down some sod.  It costs about .50 to .60 cents per square foot, so depending on the time of year, for a few hundred dollars you can put down an inviting carpet of green.  If your trees are over grown, trim them back — buyers can be easily scared off because they perceive the trees to be high maintenance.  In fact, just as you cleared up the clutter in your home, clear up the clutter in your yard.  Buyers enjoy clean uncomplicated, yet  intentional design.  Dig a shallow circle around your trees and plant flowers.  Surround them with neutrally colored bark.

Draw attention away from unsightly areas such as fences or fire hydrants by placing eye catching foliage in areas that show off your property’s best features.  Implement the same kinds of ideas to your back yard.  If you have large areas, border them and put down additional bark.  Accent those areas again with decorative potted flowers that you’ll be able to take the pots with your when you move.

If you lack imagination, pick up a magazine from your local hardware store and look at some landscape design pictures for ideas.   Implement a few simple landscaping strategies like these works wonders and will at least get your home seen, if not sold!

The Essentials for a Successful Rock Garden

Posted: under Home furniture.

In rock gardening, as in any other type of gardening, there are certain elemental requirements which must be provided before success is to be achieved.

For the great majority of plants which are suitable for use in a rock garden, there is nothing in the way of cultural peculiarities which may cause the beginner to hesitate. Some subjects, especially among the true alpines, are admittedly difficult to handle, but there is no occasion to try these at the beginning; and even in sections where they may not be grown at all, there are so many others which will do nicely that their absence is not a serious handicap.

As in other types of gardening, so in rock gardening we have taken much of our garden lore from Europe, especially from England. The English climate is entirely different from that in most sections of the United States. So for many years the supposition prevailed that rock gardening was not adapted to American conditions.

The reason for this supposition was that many rock plants and alpines which thrive in the English climate were not so well pleased with the environment they found over here; but no notice was taken of the fact that there are just as many plants suitable for rock-garden work which thrive better in our American climate than they do in England! Adding a conservative outdoor fountain as well can give any rock garden a decidedly unique style.

Many native American plants have been found suitable for rock gardening, and there are hundreds of others not yet procurable through ordinary commercial channels, many of which are gradually becoming available.

Now that we have broken away from the continental apron strings in rock gardening and have really started out for ourselves,  rock gardening may be satisfactorily undertaken in practically all sections of this country, even though the same plants may not be utilized everywhere. As our experience increases, we are grinding out what can and what cannot be grown under our widely differing climatic conditions.

In this connection it may be pointed out that the true alpine plants are native to sections where the growing season is extremely short, usually not over a hundred to a hundred and fifty days. They are to be found in all parts of the world between the timber-line and the snow-line, or so far toward the north or the South Pole that the climate is similar to that of high mountain elevations.

Quite naturally, such plants as these do not feel at home where they are subjected to weeks if not months of hot, dry summer weather. Fortunately, however, plants for the rock garden are not restricted to the alpines.

If there is one thing more than all others which the great majority of rock plants, including not only the true alpines but the many additional varieties suitable for rock work, insist upon having, it is extra good drainage. If the rock garden is artificially built, with a wall water fall and elevated, as it usually is, above the general ground level, good drainage will be assured provided a suitable soil has been used.

For the natural rock garden, to be planted where nature has built the framework of the garden, and there is no additonal adornment of outdoor water features, this should be the first consideration. Often rocks are to be found in abundance where drainage is poor; such a spot, no matter how picturesque it may be, will not make a good site for the rock garden. Under such conditions, good drainage may be provided artificially, but usually only at considerable expense.

As to the soil itself, most alpines and rock plants shun a clay soil; nor do they prefer an extremely sandy soil. The soils to which they are native are composed mostly of decomposed rocks and shale in which the majority of our ordinary garden plants would fare but ill. Some of them insist upon having this type of soil when grown under domesticated conditions, while others are more adaptable.

As is the case with some of our other garden plants, some of the rock plants prefer a lime soil and others an acid-reacting soil, while still others appear to be entirely indifferent. Unless the rock garden is to be constructed on a very generous scale, the matter of soil, while important, is not a serious consideration, for the comparatively small amount required may readily be made to order by the amateur rock gardener.

Improving the look of your Flower Garden

Posted: under Home furniture.

Flowers can give life to any empty space. You can transform your dull yard into something that exudes richness and colors by filling it with wonderful blooms of flowers. All gardeners can attest that gardening is an indeed gratifying hobby. One of the most exciting parts of gardening that makes people be hooked to it is designing the garden. With the word design, we know that this is an art form, which is subjective and dependent of people’s different tastes and preferences.

However, even if garden designing is all a matter of personal taste, there are still general guidelines to follow to ensure that you are able to make a beautiful garden design. If you are new to gardening or have no idea how to design your garden, here are some useful tips to guide you.

The following tips will not solely be for aesthetic purposes but for practical reasons as well. Draw the MapThe first step in garden design is drawing the map of your garden.

Determine the size of the area where you intend to plant your flowers then make a rough sketch of the yard in relation to the plot. Include in your map other aspects of the yard such as existing plants and trees, poles, faucets, and slopes. It is also essential that you observe sun patterns and take note of these so you will know where to place plants that need a full amount of sunlight to thrive.

Select the FlowersOnce you have completed your base map, it is now the time to map out the flowering plants you intend to put in your garden.

This leads to the next step, which involves flower seed selection. With the wide variety of flower species to choose from, it can be quite overwhelming to choose. Of course, it is imperative that you are able to choose flowers that will grow and thrive well in the soil and weather conditions in your garden.

Annuals or perennials?

Just like any gardener, you may find yourself torn between these two types of plants: annuals and perennials. Whether to go with annuals or perennials is just a question of which is more suitable to your needs and attitudes as a gardener.  But it is always a good idea to incorporate both annuals and perennials in your garden. Annual flower seeds provide your garden with a lush of colorful and long-lasting blooms.

Plant them close together and you will be rewarded with a thick cluster of flowers that are surely pleasing to the eyes. Do not forget to include perennials, which after its short duration of bloom remain to be a visually interesting part of your garden with its foliage and textures.

Incorporate the Elements of Design Aside from choosing whether to grow annuals or perennial flower seeds, it will also help to consider the elements of design: color, texture and balance.  ColorThe most prominent element of design is color. This is the first thing that catches the eye when you walk into a garden. Because of this, it is imperative that you are able to choose flowers that will look good together.

To ensure this, use the painting palette as your guide. To achieve a harmonious look for your garden, use a monochromatic pattern (choosing one hue and using it in its different tints and shades) or complementary colors (these are colors that are opposite to each other on the color wheel such as red/green or orange/blue.

For a more dramatic effect, plant contrasting colors next to each other. A pack of wildflower seeds is an efficient way to achieve this effect. This however requires a keen eye for colors so you do not end up with a garden full of clashing colors that are stressful to the eyes.  If you are new in gardening, start with 2 to 3 colors to avoid being overwhelmed with lots of colors.

Your garden has life, which means it will change over time. So expect to see changes in colors and be ready to redesign if the colors do not go well together anymore.

Texture

Another important element of design is texture. Plant texture is not all about the foliage but also about how plants look like in different light or shadow conditions. To accomplish a perfect balance in texture, one-thirds of the flowers should have fine texture and two-thirds should be coarse.

Balance

Balance or symmetry ensures that there is order and proportion in the layout of your garden. To achieve balance in your garden design, consider the mature sizes of the plants you intend to grow. This will help you ensure that you will be able to balance the plants more efficiently.

Layout the Garden

After you finish with the design of the garden, lay it out in your yard by placing strings, pegs and other markers to designate the spaces in the plot. It is a good idea to purchase the flowers you intend to grow in small batches and then experiment with them to see if you have made the right choice in selecting them.

More Tips on Garden Design

·         Plant in curved lines rather in straight rows to make the garden more visually appealing.

·         Add fragrance in your garden by planting sweet smelling perennial flowers like daffodil, lily, hosta and iris.

·         Plant flowers that attract butterflies. Butterflies not only help in pollination but also add color and interest to your already beautiful garden.

·         Give plant sufficient space in between so you do not end up with a cluttered garden.

·         Do not forget to include a place where you can sit. A comfortable chair, bench, or hammock can turn your wonderful garden into a place of relaxation.

·         Include a pathway. This will ensure that you can tend to your plants without needing to wet your feet.  In garden designing, you are the artist and your garden is your canvas. Make a masterpiece by pouring out energy, creativity and passion into it.
